Wednesday, February 17, 2016

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) recently announced OLG Casino Brantford has achieved LEED Silver certification from the Canada Green Building Council. The facility strived to meet this achievement as part of OLG’s Bet on Green program and sustainability efforts.

“OLG is taking steps to reduce our environmental footprint and, in many ways, Casino Brantford is leading the way for the organization,” said Stephen Rigby, OLG president and chief executive officer, in a press release. “This is a strong example of our efforts to reduce our environmental impact and demonstrates OLG’s commitment to strengthening the communities in which we operate.”

OLG incorporated several green elements into the design and construction of the Brantford casino in order to achieve LEED Silver certification, including reducing water consumption by 49 per cent; reducing lighting power use by 26.3 per cent; using 11.3 per cent recycled content in its construction; using 8.9 per cent renewable materials during construction; and employing 90 per cent Energy Star-rated appliances in the facility.

The facility aims to reduce carbon emissions by offering easy access to public transportation; two electric vehicle charging stations in the parking lot; bicycle storage and change rooms with showers; and an extensive recycling program practiced throughout the facility.

“Achieving LEED Silver certification is a very important milestone,” said Edward Day, general manager of OLG Casino Brantford. “However, to maintain this certification it requires an extensive team effort. We at Casino Brantford are all committed to this effort.”

As part of OLG’s Bet on Green program, the company has decreased greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 16,000 tonnes over the last four years and has reduced the size of lottery tickets by 25 per cent to reduce paper use. OLG also supports various green initiatives in the communities surrounding its facilities, including the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, which OLG sponsors and participates in.
